Thomas Telford, a prolific and gifted engineer, stone mason, architect and road builder was involved in surveying the land and springs surrounding Edinburgh with a view to solving the problem of water scarcity after dry periods in 1810. He played a hand in designing the works to bring water from the Crawley Springs into Edinburgh.
