The gap site behind Shrubhill House was once home to Shrubhill tram works and power station which was opened in 1898, however a depot of a similar type had been on the site previously. The haulage engines for the tram system were housed in the building as were a number of maintenance workshops. After the decommissioning of the Edinburgh trams the building was taken over by Lothian Region Transport who used this as their company headquarters for many years but the building was sold in 1999 and work was moved to other depots across the city.
