In 2009 a project began to renovate the Grade C listed, Victorian building at 37-41 Nicolson Street. The project was undertaken by Edinburgh World Heritage (EWH) whose role is to protect and conserve the heritage of Edinburgh and to promote the city and its status as a World Heritage site.
The building was built in 1899, designed by the architect Peter Henderson. This building was purpose built as a shop, the first occupant being John McIntyre & Co, who sold fabrics and ladies clothing, a precursor to today's department stores. Today the building is occupied by a Poundsavers shop.
In 2009 the first stage of the renovation began with a refurbishment of the roof, including conserving the stone sculptures which decorate it and repairs to the stonework in general. The interior ornate plasterwork and cast iron columns were also conserved.
2011 saw the start of the final stage of the works being done, a stage which involved removing the existing timber shop front to reveal the intact Victorian façade which lay beneath it. This exhibition focuses on the latter stages of this project, documenting the work from the removal of the existing timber frame to the final, restored shop front as it appears today.
