The statue of John Wilson shows him in a thoughtful pose with a half-open manuscript is by Sir John Steell. It was unveiled on the 25th March 1865 - the same day as the nearby Allan Ramsay marble statue.

Professor Wilson (1785-1854) was born to a wealthy family near Paisley, and studied at Glasgow and Oxford. He was an influential thinker who wrote for Blackwoods Magazine, and became Professor of Moral Philosophy at Edinburgh University, which caused some controversy. He wrote under the pseudonym of Christopher North, and his anti-reform views provoked opposition.
