Leith Walk Primary school, with a Gothic design by W.L. Moffat & Aitken, was built in 1875 at a cost of £9,000 and is a good example of an Edinburgh Board school. Its decorated collegiate style was designed to accommodate 840 scholars.

Edinburgh School Board was set up when the 1872 Act superseded the burgh arrangements. All of the buildings have their own stone roundel of Education with her pupils.
