Barnaby Rudge was Dickens' fifth novel and first published as a serialization in Master Humphrey's Clock. The subject is the 1780 Gordon Riots and is one of only two historical novels by Dickens.
The eponymous character, Barnaby Rudge unwittingly gets involved in the Gordon Riots. He ends up getting arrested and being sentenced to death. Fortunately, the sentence is later reprieved.
