The Old Curiosity Shop was Charles Dickens' fourth novel and when serialized between 1840 and 1841 sold more than 100 000 copies every week.
Dick Swiveller wants to marry his friend, Fred Trent's sister, Nell. However, he decides to wait until she inherits her grandfather's money. Nell escapes London with her grandfather leaving Swiveller behind. Nell Trent is the principal and tragic protagonist in the story.
