Building began on the Catholic Apostolic Church in Broughton Street in 1873, but it wasn't until 1893 that the artist Phoebe Anna Traquair began the mammoth task of painting the interior murals. It took eight years to complete this work. In 1958 the last Catholic Apostolic priest died and the church lies dormant until it is taken over by a Baptist church in 1974. Fourteen years later the building is sold to the Edinburgh Brick Company and it's physical decline continues. Eventually the council place a compulsory purchase order on the building in 1997 and the Mansfield Traquair Trust begin the slow process to restoring the church and the murals within.
