Ramsay Garden stands immediately to the north of the entrance to the Castle Esplanade. The complex incorporates the home of Alan Ramsay, known as Ramsay Lodge or the 'Goose Pie', designed and built by the poet around 1740. The additional buildings were designed by S. Henbest Capper and Sidney Mitchell and built between 1892-93. They included a block of flats for Professor Patrick Geddes and mixed accommodation for Edinburgh University students and non-student residents of the city.
A substantial terrace was added to the north-west of Ramsay Lodge in 1856-57 as part of alterations conducted by Robert W. Billings for Lord Murray. It collapsed in March 1860 (see Edinburgh Evening Courant March 3rd and 6th 1860)
