The demolition of Dumbryden Primary School, Wester Hailes

Description

What was once Dumbryden Primary School is now being sorted into bricks on one side and metal frames on the other. In the centre a large vertical concrete slab is still standing. A number of graffiti signatures have been added as has the mysterious message "Cleaned the courtyard- No thanks necessary." A remaining door frame complete with blue door can be seen in the background.

Dumbryden Primary School was opened in 1963. There were nine classrooms. In addition the school had an infant and upper school hall, music room, infant and upper school library, resource base, an information technology suite, dining room and a large playground. There was also a nursery.
In 2004 the council considered the falling rolls across the city and voted to close Dumbryden Primary and the nearby Hailesland Primary and united the pupils in a new school at Canal View. There was local unhappiness at the decision.
Inspite of boarding up windows there were still incidences of vandalism and fire raising. In 2010 the school was finally demolished.
Prospect Housing Association bought the land and plan to build housing on the site.
