Title
Still Life
Description
A still life work of a vase, bowl of bananas and a wine decanter. The work has a thick impasto of painterly brushstrokes. The paint seems to be the focus rather than the objects themselves. The thick layering of paint emphasises the creamy nature of the medium. The use of white reflects the light on the table surface and in the glass of the vase and decanter. The composition is simple with a well balanced tonal theme highlighting the shapes of the objects.

S.J Peploe is one of the Scottish Colourists whose work in the early part of this century was influenced by French Post-Impressionist art. Peploe was also a major influence on subsequent Scottish art.
Born and raised in Edinburgh, he studied in Paris in the 1890's. At the time this small still life was completed, Peploe was considered a promising young artist, but yet to establish a significant reputation. The purchase of the work by the Scottish Modern Arts Association in its inaugural year provoked a degree of comment in the columns of the Scottish press.
Despite the controversy, it is nethertheless a fine example of an early work in Peploe's favourite genre, Still Life.
