Peploe, Samuel John

Biography

Born and brought up in Edinburgh, Peploe began work in a law firm, before studying art in the city and in Paris. One of the Scottish Colourists, he first visited the west coast of Iona in 1920 with F.C.B. Cadell. He returned frequently over the next thirteen years. The island's long spiritual history and climate seemed to bring a sense of freedom to his work.
