Courtyard at Well Court

Description

An image of the courtyard at Well Court, Dean Village, Edinburgh taken from a high vantage point. The shadow of the clock tower lies over the drying green with its clothes poles. The stone houses with their red rosemary tiles and leaded windows line the edge of the courtyard. One of the buildings has a large arched opening in it. Green trees can be seen forming a skyline against the brilliant blue sky.

Well Court is located in Dean Village, Edinburgh. It was commissioned by John Findlay, owner of The Scotsman and finished in 1886. Findlay instructed architect Sydney Mitchell to create model housing to accommodate 55 working class families. Tenants had to abide by strict rules which included a curfew (they were locked out if they got home late) and attending church. The houses have recently been renovated with the help of a grant from Edinburgh World Heritage.
