Stone steps lead up through a narrow lane between houses. Two women stand in the foreground talking and one is holding a baby. Another woman and child stand at the top of stairs at the first floor doorway to a house. Washing is strung from poles outside windows.

Leith Wynd, Edinburgh. Leith Wynd led from the Burgh of Canongate to Leith and was situated opposite St. Mary's Street off the High Street. It was demolished due to the 1867 Improvement Act and was replaced by Jeffrey Street and Cranston Street.
