The view shows a landscape of buildings of different styles and at varying levels against a blue sky. High on the horizon at the left stands Edinburgh Castle on top of a rocky mound and to the right a church steeple of the Tolbooth Church now the Hub. In the foreground is the fire damaged building of Kushi's restaurant completely surrounded by scaffolding. The only part of the roof which remains are the charred beams.

Victoria Street and Terrace were constructed between 1829 and 1834 to link the Grassmarket to George IV Bridge, also built at this time. The street cut through the pre-existing West Bow, joining its lower section for the final descent to the Grassmarket and blocking through traffic to its upper section leading to the Lawnmarket. The Tolbooth Church, otherwise known as Victoria Hall or St John's Highland Tolbooth Kirk, was built in 1842-44 as both a parish church and a meeting place for the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. The Church's congregation left the building in 1979, amalgamating with the congregation of Greyfriars Kirk. The Church fell into disuse but was revived in 1999 as 'The Hub', an information centre, ticket office, and venue for the Edinburgh International Festival.
