Ginkaku-ji (Silver Pavilion) was commissioned by Yoshimasa Ashikaga (1436-90), who was the 8th Shogun (supreme military commander) of the Muromachi government. The Pavilion consists of 2 storeys: Shinkuden (residential style) and the Choonkaku (Buddhist temple style). The roof is made of thin wooden shingles, which is called kokera-buki and there is a Chinese phoenix on the top. Unlike Kinkaku-ji, the Ginkaku-ji is not covered with silver leaf. The reason for this is unknown because Yoshimasa passed away during its construction. According to scientific research in 2007, silver foil was not discovered on the walls, indicating that it had not been covered with silver from the very beginning.
