During the Meiji period, (1868- 1912) Japan was a mysterious and untrodden country because it had strictly controlled contact with foreign countries for over 200 years. After the door opened in 1854, foreigners including British people, began to visit Japan. When they described Japan they needed to use metaphors to explain Japan and the popular places or objects. For example, Osaka was likened to Venice and was called the 'Asian Venice' among foreigners.
