A 'tenement' is a multi-storey building divided into several private flats. Such buildings became commonplace in Edinburgh's overcrowded Old Town from the 15th century onwards. Such buildings formed a large part of the new housing built during Edinburgh's expansion in the 19th century. Much of the city's population still live in these tenement flats.
