The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, an organisation principally concerned with the postgraduate training and examination of doctors, is based on Queen Street. The main building was designed by Thomas Hamilton for the RCPE and completed in 1844. The RCPE has expanded its premises beyond Hamilton's building, acquiring property on both sides including number 8 Queen Street, built by Robert Adam in 1770-1 for Baron Orde. The Cullen Room was Baron Orde's principal drawing room. The ceiling was designed by Robert Adam. The room takes its name from William Cullen, a past President of the College who was one of the most renowned physicians in Europe during the second half of the eighteenth century.
