Description

Light from skylights in a spectacular coffered ceiling and brass gasoliers illuminate the room that contains the library of the Royal College of Physcians in Edinburgh. Books are shelved in glass cases at both ground level and on a balcony that is edged by a wooden and ornate metal balustrade.

The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, an organisation principally concerned with the postgraduate training and examination of doctors, is based on Queen Street. The main building was designed by Thomas Hamilton for the RCPE and completed in 1844. The RCPE has expanded its premises beyond Hamilton's building, acquiring property on both sides including number 8 Queen Street, built by Robert Adam in 1770-1 for Baron Orde. The architect for the library was David Bryce. The ceiling was the work of James Anderson and James Milne made the brass gasoliers.
