Planting of a new tree in the Grassmarket, Edinburgh

Description

Three workmen are standing within a circular foundation base supporting a tree which is being planted inside the concrete ring. Another workman wearing protective clothing and a hard hat is standing at a distance holding onto rope which is attached to the upper part of the tree in order to keep the tree upright whilst it is positioned. Behind the construction area is a large crane and a row of tenement buildings with shop fronts and canopies at street level.

The Grassmarket is an open area situated below Edinburgh Castle at the west end of the Cowgate. It was, for many centuries, an important venue for commercial and social activity in the Old Town. A weekly market was held here from the 15th to the early 20th century. It was also the site of many public executions. The Grassmarket continues to be a popular area for socialising, with a large number of pubs and restaurants.
