Edinburgh College of Art is situated immediately to the north of Lauriston Place on the site of a former cattle market. It was designed by George Washington Browne and John More Dick Peddie and built between 1907 and 1911. The Edinburgh College of Art operates independently, but is an accredited institution of the University of Edinburgh.
The Castle Esplanade is an area of open ground between Edinburgh Castle and Castlehill. The area is used for the annual Edinburgh Military Tattoo.
