In 1980 an order was placed with the Robb-Caledon Division of British Shipbuilders for construction of a replacement for THV Patricia to be built in Leith. The design of the replacement vessel provides for a helideck to be used in the servicing of rock lighthouses. The ship will be equipped with the most modern navigational aids including Omega and Loran receivers as well as an automatic pilot and Doppler log together with a receiver for satellite navigation and search sonar for wreck finding. It is anticipated that the new ship will be in service early in 1982. She will be able to carry up to 12 buoys and in addition to a 20-ton speedcrane, various deck machinery will be provided to facilitate the recovery of buoys and chain cable on the foredeck. As a high degree of manoeuvrability is required, the ship will be fitted with twin-screws, twin rudders and an electrically driven bow thruster. A twin engine-room layout will provide A.C. supply throughout the ship. Both propulsion motors and the bow thruster will use A.C. power via thyristor controllers. Full bridge control facilities will be available. She will have a service speed of 14 knots.
