Title
Silver sling-back women's shoes, Starlight Room, early 1960s
Description
Silver faux-leather and metallic slingback evening shoes with low heel. Fastened with a metal buckle.
Location
Museum of Edinburgh
Accession number
SH.2018.254
These evening shoes were worn by a Mrs Davidson, who attended dinner dances in Edinburgh hotels in the early 1960s. They were worn with a satin or tulle evening dress, long gloves and a clutch bag.
Venues such as the North British Hotel (now the Balmoral) hosted dinner dances for companies and societies throughout the year. they provided the opportunity to get dressed up, enjoy a meal and go dancing.
The use of faux leather for these shoes is typical of the period. Imitations of leather and other expensive materials were widely used for mid-priced evening styles, which didn't need to withstand everyday wear. Their glamorous designs imitated more expensive leather styles, but were more accessible.
