Every spring hundreds of Common Toads migrate from their winter refuges on the hillside in Holyrood Park to their main breeding ground in Dunsapie Loch. The female, much larger than the male, carries its mate on their hazardous journey, crossing roads such as the Park High Road. This road is cleared of toads by the Historic Environment Scotland Ranger Service early each morning before vehicle access is permitted.
