Description
'One notes that for once the artist has failed to do justice to the horrors of his subject. The human imagination halts paralysed before the inferno of modern war. Only from personal narratives from soldiers can one fill up the details of such bald outlines as the following:

"Givenchy and La Bassée, 25 January-7 February 1915. The Germans subjected our right centre to a heavy bombardment by trench mortars and artillery, and also made an attack in some strength on the French, east of Ypres in the neighbourhood of Zonnebecke. Here they were repulsed with ease, leaving 300 dead bodies hanging on their wire entanglements. p. 201, "Eye-witnesses' narrative of the war" London, 1916."
