Tweeddale House was built in 1576 for Neil Laing, Keeper of the Signet, and his wife, Elizabeth Danielstoune. It gets its name from John Laing, first Marquis of Tweeddale who inherited it in 1645. The house stands on the south side of Tweeddale Court (which contains a section of the King's Wall of 1450). In 1791 it became the head office of the British Linen Bank, and from 1817 until 1973 the headquarters of Oliver and Boyd, publishers. The building was restored in the 1980s and in 1984 the Scottish Poetry Library was established here.
