The Huts at Wester Hailes were built by local people to provide meeting spaces for community groups and events. They formed the hub of the community and housed many pivotal organisations including the office of The Sentinel community newspaper. By the early 1980s, some of the Huts were being used by commercial ventures. One of the first local enterprises to take up residence was the hair salon "Loose Endz". A Channel 4 documentary was broadcast in 1985 about the "Huts" at Wester Hailes and their significance to the local community.
