Papal convoy, Princes Street

Description

The Papal convoy makes it's way down Princes Street, Edinburgh. The street is lined with police officers in yellow jackets. Crowds of people stand behind barricades. To the left hand side people can be seen standing on a balcony watching the street below. The convoy passes the Balmoral Hotel, the Scott Monument and the Royal Society of Art. The Nelson Monument on Calton Hill can be seen in the background.

Pope Benedict XVI visited the UK from September 16th -19th 2010. This was the first official Papal visit to the UK, taking in events in Edinburgh, Glasgow, London and Birmingham. He visited Edinburgh on the 16th September.

Pope Benedict XVI was born Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger on 16 April 1927 in Marktl, Bavaria, Germany. He is the 265th Pope. He was elected on 19 April 2005 and celebrated his Papal Inauguration Mass on 24th April 2005.
