Title
Dunbar Castle
Description
The ruins of Dunbar Castle are built around a rocky outcrop in the sea. The remains of various towers and archways can be seen. The distinction between the ruins of the manmade fortress and the rocks is not clear in the painting. A stone foot bridge, on which three people stand, leads to the ruin. The sky above is gloomy and cloudy. The Isle of May and Bass Rock are visible on the horizon.

Dunbar Castle was once one of the most important castles in Scotland. It played a vital defensive role in many battles against the English throughout the Middle Ages. It was extended extensively by Mary of Guise, the mother of Mary Queen of Scots. The buildings measured more than 165 feet by 210 feet. The castle was owned by Lord Bothwell the alleged kidnapper of Mary Queen of Scots. Due to the castle's association with Mary and Catholicism it was dismantled in 1567 by order of Parliament.
The title on the watercolour is 'Dunbar Castle 1 April 1830'
