The strategic importance of Stirling Castle has made it a longstanding focal point of military conflict. It has been besieged numerous times, and was completely destroyed by Robert the Bruce in the early 14th century. Most of the current building dates from the late 15th and 16th centuries. The Castle was the home of Scottish Kings and Queens for many centuries until the Act of Union in 1707. The Castle is now cared for by Historic Environment Scotland.
