The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'Penicuik House, the residence of Sir George Douglas Clerk, Bart., is situated in the parish of the same name, about 10 miles from the centre of Edinburgh, and two from the town of Penicuik. The house was erected by Sir James Clerk in 1761, from his own plans. As he had lived much in Italy, and made architecture his particular study, no professional architect was employed on any part of the building.'
The full text may be viewed from the volume which is held at the Edinburgh and Scottish Collection in Edinburgh Central Library.
Penicuik House is still home to the Clerk family.
