The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'Newbattle Abbey, the principal seat of the Marquis of Lothian, is situated in the parish of the same name, about six miles south of Edinburgh. It is a large building with a castellated front, erected on the site of a monastic structure, founded in the reign of David I., in 1140, for the Cistercian monks. A portion of the wall which surrounded the old Abbey is still standing, and retains the name of the Monkland Wall.'
The full text may be viewed from the volume which is held at the Edinburgh and Scottish Collection in Edinburgh Central Library.
Newbattle is now an events venue.
