The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'This mansion is situated in the parish of Aberlady, East Lothian, and is the chief seat of the Right Hon. the Earl of Wemyss and March. About the end of the last century large sums were spent on a new mansion designed by W. Adam, architect, and from the amenity of the situation and beauty of the grounds, it was fitted to form a charming residence. Unfortunately, however, the mortar used being composed partly of sand from the sea-side, it was found that the walls exuded such an amount of damp as to injure the furnishings, and it had to be abandoned as a residence. Meanwhile extensive additions intended to be of a temporary character were made to the old mansion house, and here the family has chiefly resided, while the unfinished new mansion remains uninhabited.'
