The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'The mansion house of Carberry, the residence of the right Hon. Lord Elphinstone, is beautifully situated on the northern slope of the hill of that name in the parish of Inveresk. It stands in a richly wooded park, and commands a lovely view of the country to the west, and of the Firth of Forth to the north. The tower is a very ancient building, and was originally a single square fortalice. The date of its erection is not ascertained, but it must have been a considerable house in the sixteenth century, as in 1547 it was the property of Hugh Rigg, an advocate, who had also a good estate adjoining. The under story of the tower is strongly arched, and what was its principal lower apartment is now the entrance hall of the mansion, and is lined with oak panelling. The apartment immediately above is fitted up as an armoury, containing many specimens of ancient and modern weapons, many of them finely inlaid.'
Carberry Tower is now a hotel.
The full text may be viewed from the volume which is held at the Edinburgh and Scottish Collection in Edinburgh Central Library.
