Although the First World War saw many technological advances particularly in weaponry, horses and mules were still relied upon for much of the transport. They were used to carry supplies; for general riding; as gun horses (pulling the artillery); and as cavalry horses in battle. The British army used more than one million horses and mules in the First World War and to keep up with demand a thousand a week were sent from America.
