Title
No.9. (cont.) Sleeping, an illustrated page from 'A Day in a Child's Life'
Description
The rest of the ninth piece, Sleeping, continues at the top of the page - the piano accompaniment plus melody line. The words are as follows:
'[1.] Ever wakeful, ever near.
Lullaby, lullaby!
[2.] Then softly sleep, my heart's delight.
Lullaby, lullaby!
[3.] And give thee, smiling, today and to me.
Lullaby, lullaby!'
Beneath the music are two pictures separated by a rod entwined with leaves.
In the first a little girl sleeps on a pink stripy cushion in a high-backed wicker chair. She wears early 19th century dress, a long loose-fitting white dress with a blue sash and a mob-like cap - and on either side of her are two standard rose bushes shaped into balls.
The second picture is set within an oval shape. A little boy in a skeleton suit and a large green hat sits on a gassy mound, a landscape and setting sun behind him, as he rubs his eyes.
