Title
Hercules and the Waggoner, illustrated page from 'Baby's Own Aesop'
Description
A waggoner, on one knee in the mud with his arms outstretched, pleads to a statue of Hercules who is cradling some apples. Behind the waggoner, his cart is stuck in the mud and the two oxen cannot pull it out. They are transporting two butchered pigs, and in the distance the road winds on into mountains. A sunset bathes the scene in pink. The rhyme reads,
"Hercules and the Waggoner

When the god saw the waggoner kneel,
Crying, "Hercules! Lift me my wheel
From the mud, where 'tis stuck!"
He laughed, "No such luck;
Set your shoulder yourself to the wheel."

The gods help those who help themselves."
