The building on the right corner of the junction looks like a public building, but actually housed a biscuit factory belonging to R. Middlemass & Co. It was built in 1895 to produce the company's most famous, the "Healthylife Biscuit". Robert Middlemass & Son Ltd. was a baker, confectioner and biscuit maker from 1845 to 1900. Middlemass is credited with creating the once popular 'Albert' biscuit and thought by some to be the originator of the digestive biscuit, although McVitie's also make this claim.
The site is now occupied by another very distinctive building, the National Library of Scotland's Map Library.
