A girl in a dress stand in front of a woman with a skirt and jacket. A metal barred gate is across the entry way to a stairwell. Street numbers are above doorways. Signs are on the buildings. The Grassmarket Mission still operates in the area but has moved to Candlemaker Row. The ground floor of the building is now occupied by a pub called Biddy Mulligan's.
The Grassmarket is a central area situated below Edinburgh Castle. It has been the site of many public executions. A weekly market was held there from 1477 until 1911. The Grassmarket continues to be a popular area for socialising.
