The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'The mansion, the residence of Sir Robert Alexander Osborne Dalyell, Bart., is situated in the parish of Abercorn, Linlihgowshire. It was originally a square peel tower, and some of the existing masonry may date back to the fourteenth century. The present house was built around 1623, and greatly enlarged in 1840, and is an irregular edifice of considerable extent, with towers and embrasures.'
The full text may be viewed from the volume which is held at the Edinburgh and Scottish Collection, Central Library, Edinburgh.
The upkeep of The Binns is provided by The National Trust for Scotland.
