There had been plans for a light rail system in Edinburgh since the 1970s.
October 1971 saw a plan proposed to utilise redundant railway lines as part of a light rail system.
April 1974. A two-part study of plans recommended “sufficiently strong to justify” a rail-based system.
Late 1974. The City Council voted to finance a second phase of integrated rail-based transport system. Old railway lines would be utilised but modernised with electrification. Lines to Oxgangs would be on-street light rail and other routes to Leith and other places would be by tram or mini-tram.
Light rail routes would be:-
1. Burdiehouse to Leith North via Liberton, Waverley, Trinity. (Terminus would be at site of 2023 Newhaven tram terminus.)
2. Corstorphine to Duddingston and Niddrie via St Andrew Square. Western section was to use former railway track. A north-west branch to Granton was also a possibility. The eastern section would be mainly on viaduct. Stops would be c800 metres apart.
By the late 80s and early nineties, discussions and reports were still ongoing. It was decided to put the north – south line into the old tunnel from Waverley to Leith and continue it in a tunnel along the line of Nicholson and Clerk Streets to the north end of Minto Street. After protest about on-street disruption, the underground route was to extend as far as Cameron Toll.
