The song sheet illustration by John Brandard features the end to the siege of Delhi and its subsequent capture by British troops in 1857. The illustration stages the triumphal scene of the British infantry led by two generals on horseback flanked with troops, marching triumphantly through the city of Delhi. The union jacks carried by the generals form centre stage of the illustration. The smoke of the battle fills the background above which the domed architecture of Delhi appears.
This celebration of the Empire, military and monarchy can be seen across John Brandard's work, especially in his portrayal of members of the monarchy and many of the topical events concerning the British Empire at the time.
John Pridham (1818-96) was a prolific piano composer, whose output covered many of the subjects held dear to Victorian life in the latter nineteenth century, such as landscape, entertainment, exotic places, monarchy and the military. These themes were executed in an idealistic fashion reflecting the mores of the day.
