This deeply incised stone was set in the wall of Tolbooth Wynd above the entrance to Old Sugarhouse Close. Dated 1678 it depicts the work of wine porters unshipping a cargo and transferring hogsheads to the Vaults.
Details include the seaman furling sail, the stingmen bearing a hogshead on a sting (or pole), a primitive crane operated by a man in a treadmill, and a building which is presumably the Vaults.
