in the darkness of the endless, lonely plains.
We are seeing something of the inside life of the country here, as we have made friends with the jolly peasant women & go in & out of their houses. The Russian is by nature a genial & company-loving man & even the common people are attractive. These are simple & good natured & very easily pleased or amused. Their poverty does not prevent them from being happy in their melancholy slave fashion. Black bread, "chai", cabbage & buckwheat are the chief items of the "Moujik's" fare. He is a fluent liar, but generally from aimiable motives!!
They are a very young people, a real & genuine Democracy. They shew their eagerness, their disgust,their disappointment, their amusement simply as the mood moves them. They have no sense of time of method or of system. Why should they?! "Chéchast!" "Nitchevo!". If they were to think of these things, they would be compelled to use restraint & that would bother them!! They are pessimists, one & all & when things are at their worst, then they are relieved & even
