Description
We have pitched our tents in an open space (freshly plouged [ploughed] land judging from the surface!) just beyond the village - on all
sides vast stretches of flat land - no country for war, there is simply no "cover" anywhere. Everywhere troops, guns, camps, trenches & other signs of war. We are right in the heart of the district known as "The Dobroud- scha[Dobrudscha]" - you'll come to hear more about it methinks, we are at present about 5 miles "behind". I fear the life of our present dressing-tent will be very short, as the news is very bad. There is a certain sense of strain about the life up here - uncertainty. The booming of the guns goes on day & night. There seems to be no panic among the inhabitants (the few who are left in the village) but certainly a very fixed determination to get away. The ceaseless stream of motor ambulances tearing along the dusty road never stops, the tooting of horns never ceases, while the sense of hurry & stress goes on all the time. We have 2 big dressing tents, a mess tent & 6 small ones for the staff. The first few days we spent in comparative idleness - pitched our tents, unpacked the Hospital
