Description
left to his intelligence. If an officer asks him a question that he cannot answer, he may not say "I do not know", his reply is "I cannot know"! As a rule he does not know his right foot from his left, can neither read nor write & is totally uneducated. He is religious in every fibre of his being. But, "cleanliness" comes not "next to godliness" with him - they are all filthy in their habits. Of course, poor souls, when they come in they are in a terrible condition. None of us love that part of the business! I wish you could have looked in to our barrack room last night about 11 p.m. when we were turning in. All down the line, the whole "75" in very scanty attire,"catching 'em" by the aid of a tallow candles, which burned spasmodically - most thrilling, I assure you! For some unknown reason, you will be glad to hear, I did not "fall a victim" - I presume, 'cause I saturated myself well with Kerosine [Kerosene] preparitory [preparatory] to the convoy arriving & I've kept myself saturated ever since! However, I was one of the few lucky ones - my right hand floor-mate had quite a big "bag" - 50 I think!
