Description
special Providence taking care of us & watching over us. We are all so wonderfully fit too. Of course we're a bit fagged-out & - always hungry, but that's hardly to be wondered at. We "trek" most of the day & when darkness comes scramble on to our dear jolting carts & rumble & bump along - shaken to bits - the motion is like nothing on earth! Our diet can not be called "rich feeding" it's "high" at times certainly! Our bully-beef came to an untimely end some days ago so now our rations consist of a ship's biscuit, a couple of slices of sour, black, "green-fluff" mouldy (that's putting it mildly!) bread - but never a drop to drink. That's what we miss - I could drink the ocean I do believe.
We "looted" a goose en route the other day & it afforded us no end of amusement preparing it "for table" & no end of joy consuming it. It lasted us for 3 days! We got the goose - but had no pot - so that had to be our next loot - then all was complete. The soldiers assisted with the plucking - but I wish you could have seen us severing the brute with the aid of one pen knife - it was "some" work of art I assure you.
