Description
processions of disaster pass are strewn with prostrate forms of those who, from sheer exhaustion, can go no further. And there is no food for them, no shelter. I fear many will perish during this awful flight from hunger, exposure & exhaustion.
The storm shows no signs of abating. I wonder where we'll rest our weary bones to-night? Cheer oh! we'll soon be prisoners!
No word of any of the rest of the Unit. I suppose they got off by rail from Mejidia [Medjidia],. I wish we could hear something of our Transport. Really war is a terrible thing. Anyhow the Rummanians know how "to save their skins" they know how to gallop ahead irre spective of wounded, refugées[refugees] or Red X. They are a "gallant" army & no mistake. (I hope the censor is not a Rummanian!) - well - so long -
26th. Still retreating & retreating. I have not added anything to this for some days. When I did write last, things were very black & not just over - pleasant. The scenes along the highways those first days were too appalling. By mid-afternoon on 23rd. the road
