villages fleeing at foot's pace, they know not whither, from the terror that is in possession of their homes. Think of the old & the very young, the women & the helpless fleeing before this unimaginable horror; starving; their homes in ashes; their husbands, fathers & brothers gone they know not where & every moment an age of nameless fear. No, I cannot describe these sights, they strike deeper than words. The whole region is absolutely flat - as flat as the top of a table - there isn't anything even remotely resembling a hill anywhere. A terrible land for war. The scenes along the highways are really too appalling. The retreating army & the fugitive civilians are all mixed in inextricable confusion - confusion beyond all imagination. The clamour is deafening. There is the rattle of wheels, the throbbing of motors, the clatter of hoofs, the cracking of whips, the curses of the drivers, the groans
of the wounded, the cries of the women & the w[h]impering of the children, threats, pleadings, oaths, screams & always the monotonous shuffle, shuffle, shuffle of countless weary feet. And nearer, ever nearer, the booming of the guns. The fields & ditches between which these
